Worried About Taxi Overcharging? Book by App and See the Fare Before You Get In

Late at night in a busy district, a foreign traveler flags down an empty taxi, states the destination, and the driver quotes a flat fee instead of running the meter. With no shared language, it's hard to either negotiate or refuse. Call a taxi through a smartphone app ahead of time, and this kind of standoff simply doesn't happen.
At a glance: Kakao T app (overseas users can access it through the K-ride app) · accepts foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards · switch the app's language to English in settings.
Kakao T is Korea's most widely used taxi-hailing app, and it accepts foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express or JCB cards as a payment method. Switch the language to English inside the app, and the menus and address entry all work in English too, so you don't need to know Korean — just tap your destination on the map.
Overseas users can access Kakao T's taxi-hailing function through the K-ride app, without needing a Korean phone number or a Kakao account. When you request a ride, the estimated fare and route appear on screen beforehand, so you already know the cost before you even get in — no more getting surprised by the fare after you arrive.
Flag down a taxi on the street and a language barrier can easily turn into a dispute over the fare; some routes have even seen drivers quote an arbitrary amount instead of running the meter. Book through the app instead, and payment goes automatically to your registered card — no need to carry cash or check your change.
The app screen also shows the driver's name and the car's license plate, so you know in advance exactly which car you're getting into — more reassuring than flagging one down blind, especially for a traveler moving around alone late at night.
